    Hi everyone
Presently anyone can call themselves dog trainers of even behaviourists and ask for payment for their services. The clients tend to vote with their feet and mouths. Those that tend to be good at what they do succeed. However, others get where they are by TV or other means. Just because someone gets on Tv doen’t mean they are any good.

It’s up to you to get the best training yourselves and research the area totally. You can take courses (do not pay ridiculous prices) at good collages and visit as many dog trainers as possible just to see the array of different methods used.
Read recommended books see the APBC website for good books on dog behaviour and be prepared for a mass of contradicting advice. It’s a minefield. Also check out dog law and the recommendations. You should also check out how to run a small business and make sure you are insured. Also check out the kennel Club recommendations on dog training.

Now to be a qualified behaviourist you will need a degree in a related science, another degree probably and many years gaining experience and case histories to gain full membership into the APBC (Association of Pet Behavioural Counsellors) and accreditation to ASAB (Assoc Study for Animal Behav). To find out more visit the APBC website just Google apbc.

In time you will have to be fully qualified to work officially as a clinical behaviourist and vets will be advised to only refer to such. A qualified behaviourist can also consult on insurance claims.

Be aware that many behaviourists are graduating from universities and the field is becoming saturated.

Be wary of short courses that you have to pay for run by independent persons offering you the world. And be very aware of franchises that claim to be able to train you in a few weeks and then you can go on to earn a fortune in your very own area.

If you still want to work with dogs good luck it is well worth it and I wouldn’t want to do anything else.

Mmmmm not good is it – same with groomers, anyone can pick up some clippers and call themselves a groomer  ::)

I thank my lucky stars however that I have Bev if I ever have any problems with my dogs behaviour  ;D

Oh and hello and welcome – look forward to hearing from you more  🙂

Just been reading through the replies and thought i’d say hi as a new member on here!  I have a houseful of dogs and do currently run training classes aswell.  The classes are mainly for people who want a well behaved pet around the house and plenty of socialisation (sometimes the dogs are sadly lacking in this now). I have to say though it really is the people we train, the dogs are clever enough already  ;D

    Hi & Welcome 🙂

I think you are preeching to the converted here 🙂

Luckily we have Bev for our behavioural needs, and should I need my dogs grooming I would probably post William to Val and Bonnie to Joly (just to be fair – Joly can have fidgetbottom who hates her feet touched and Val can have the dog that sits every time you put your hand on its bum 😀 )

    Welcome 🙂 🙂 🙂

As the webmaster and PR person at vislor dog training centre I’m under constant pressure by Travis not to promote him in anyway which seems frustratingly counter intuitive from a business point of view but his mantra is ‘let the dogs talk for themselves’.

Which means I’m only allowed to show people his training rather than tell them about it.

Above is his recent Schutzhund 2 video.
