    Hmmm

    Schutzhund means “protection dog”

Basically there are 3 levels 1/2/3

Each level is progressively more advanced in difficulty etc and judged more harshly.

    There are 300 points available

    100 – tracking
    100 – obedience
    100 – protection

You need a minimum of 70 marks in each section to qualify.  However you need a minimum of 80 in the protection section to advance from 1 to 2 and 2 – 3, if you get less you have to enter the same level again.

The sections are graded 95+ excellent, 90+ very good 85+ good and then there is satisfactory and insufficient.

Also each individual element is graded as above which makes the marking and subsequent critique which each competitor receives verbally in front of the spectators very detailed.

In the protection phase there is also a “courage” mark, which should be “pronounced” (that is the dog not the handler) 

    Basically in 1

    Tracking

The handler lays a 3 leg track of no more than 300 yards with two articles that the dog must indicate and then runs it between 20 and 45 mins later.

    Obedience

Long down stay on the field whilst the other competitor is doing his round.

Heelwork off lead to a predetermined pattern and round a group of 4 people.

During this time two gunshots will be fired and the dog must remain indifferent to them.

The dog must do a sit in motion and a down in motion, the handler returns to the dog in the former and recalls the dog in the latter.

Retrieve on the flat, over a 1metre hurdle and over an A frame.
    Sendaway.

Great precision, focus, speed and drive is required and EVERY part of each exercise is commented on.

    Protection

The dog must leave the handler and search two hides and on locating the “helper” must “hold and bark” to prevent helper from leaving.  When the handler joins dog it must come to heel immediately on request.

The handler than tells the helper to leave the hide whereupon he takes up a predetermined position.

Handler then proceeds to a position not far away and tells the dog to lay down and then he removes himself from the dog’ sight.

The dog must watch the helper and when he attempts to escape bite the sleeve to prevent him from doing so.

When the helper stops the dog must “out” on command.  The helper then tries to escape again and hits the dog with a stick, again when he stops the dog must out on command.

The handler than joins the dog and heel up the field and turn to face the helper who threatens and comes forward, the dog must run down the field and again detain the helper once more outing on command.

The handler than joins the helper, and disarms him and escorts him to the judge with the dog guarding the helper on the way.

And that is all there is to it.

Ps the dog needs to be fit, not necessarily the handler! 😀

    do they allow for breed

tracking -ok we need some higher cued work
    obed – no probs
protection……ok errm – as in speed and height stuff in particular

hard this – need to think

ok we talking clumber and lets face it they not high on the protection stakes as a norm but i am really pround of mine – as i get the reverse steady etc and i get the on cue stuff and i dont know anyone that has got this with a clumber so…

amilou will attack on cue/  off cue – has a stand off at 3 metre and 6metre (6 metre at the moment is not fluent and reliable 100% as in another threat to me and it breaks unlke my brose who also had 12 metre fluent)

but the jumps are out and she aint fast bless (unless it an attack situ)  cos she a clumber

is there an allowance for type of breed ?

well i dont think you could do it with Brock – he would never get over that height of fence  😀

No there is no breed allowance, you can get the qualification with a low drive dog but your marks would be correspondingly low.
