A dog is as capable of moving out of a down back to you if necessary, as it is from a stand.no….my dogs are highly cued…my dogs would not..they have martini cues…so if cued to a down then in a down they would stay…but i dont go that far…i would not expose them to that risk….
So your dogs are not trained to down on command, and then follow up with another behaviour if necessary? You said to me that the down was two commands….the stop and the down. Your “highly cued” down is a Down Stay….which is three commands according to you…stop, down, and stay there. I don’t ask my dogs for a Down Stay….I ask for a down, from which I can re-command if necessary.

September 18, 2008 at 7:57 pm #69139DreeMemberC5 is Criteria level 5
+D is plus distractions. 😉
Thank-you. At 5 months old, I honestly can’t remember how strong her training was. The only thing that was strong enough at that time was the down. I certainly proofed the rest, as she worked Ticket and was placed in Ticket.
September 18, 2008 at 8:01 pm #69140MudgieMemberwhat i cant understand is how a trainer that trains dogs every day – doesnt know about criteria :-\
September 18, 2008 at 8:03 pm #69141SuzAndTheDivaMemberStill confused but Bev maybe you help me out here.
I agree a stop is a stop a down is a down I would NEVER use a down as a stop cue for this following reason.
Honey doesnt like fireworks -this time last year was only her stop cue that stopped her being killed………she jumped out my arms dragged a lead away from me and shot into the road – stop and recall was only thing that stopped her being smashed to pieces on the road…..if id downed her as a stop – by time shed got up car would of hit her……….by more luck than anything she listened to both cues and got her arse back onto the pavement…………….maybe thats the wrong way of looking at it……….but for me stop means stop – dead right where you are, then if possible i will throw in another cue – sometimes works sometimes doesnt, i confess shes as good as i can get her……….shes far from perfect..
I dont like to add too much – my training efforts are way below everyones, we dont really do training – but she does have an ok stop – :ok:

…. but i would rather have the option of another dozen ‘martini’ cues to chose from than go in to an aversive technique that also then risks an extinction on other cued behaviours
What is aversive about an instant down??? It doesn’t risk extinction of other behaviours. (If you lose other behaviours, then they’re not taught very well, imo.)

September 18, 2008 at 8:06 pm #69144Kerry_and_BeauMemberhey cj you still with us hun? or you given up?
September 18, 2008 at 8:09 pm #69145.dodger.Membermaybe a split topic is needed for the training debate and for cjane’s original problem. :agree:
September 18, 2008 at 8:10 pm #69146IzzieMemberYep, this is getting confusing now! ::)

and you havnt replied re my response re UCR and US re risk and my pup…..heyho…
Well, heyho…..I go on holiday tomorrow, and I have four dogs and a pup here….and I had a shopping to do….clothes to put in the caravan, etc., etc. Still have not done the judging sheets for hubby’s judging of Champ C on Saturday, which I’d better do. I can’t sit here and answer questions as they arise. I wish!! If you explain what UCR and US is, we can discuss….if I still have time. I don’t think, as I said to someone else, that behaviourist (or clicker) jargon, should get in the way of *everyone* understanding what we’re talking about. (Although I think I have responded to it? Losing the plot! ;D)
Cheers. I use them all the time, but I don’t use shorthand. I like people to understand what I’m talking about, and talking in abbreviations helps no-one. Imo.
September 18, 2008 at 8:18 pm #69149*Lassie*MemberIf you explain what UCR and US is,
That’s the bit I got lost on
