Erm a bit scared to ask but do you have to want to breed your dog to have tests?

Nero is in ringcraft at the mo and I’d like to have his hip score/eye test done when he turns 1yr old (cost irrelevant), just out of curiosity. He’s also endorsed against breeding and export until certain criteria is met 🙂

I feel very sorry for breeders who do all they can to create a good strong bloodline as healthy as possible, endorse the pup then its used for breeding anyway (eg “huskamutes”). Anything for a quick buck >:(

Don’t be scared  🙁 anyone can have a dog health checked if you have a pedigree it’s best to get the hips done via the BVA so that there is a record and you get a proper form with a full panel score if you have the eyes done they are best done at a border collie eye testing day as the borders are really good at holding these days they are held all over the country all you need to take is your dogs registeration papers same with the hips

Many people have the relevant health checks carried out on their pets even if they do not want to breed.

As it is expensive though many people understandably do not as it is not a requirement.

Breed clubs will have a list of the health problems that pop up regularly in their breed, hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, VwD (blood), DCM (heart), Dermoid Sinus (skin) as well as all the different eye problems that can occur.

There are approved eye testing panellists listed around the UK but it is cheaper if you can go to a day organised by a breed club, but there is usually an eye tester fairly near you.

Anyone can x-ray hips/elbows but many of us prefer to go to those that specialise in this area.

It is not necessary for the dog to be a pedigree or even licensed with the KC.

    More info about these here:

    Well Samoyed
Having look at the mail it must be me as all the other replies are from listers with companion dogs.

I think you just wanted to blaze red and blue ink, there are no BREEDERS that replied just one me I am the last BIG breeder last litter 71/2 years ago but knowledge of dogs and back room breeders far greater than yours.
So in your opinion it’s a case of sod it she wants pups let her go for it, well I am very sorry my conscience will not allow this.
If anyone on this list wanted to take up breeding and they asked I would put them in touch with the right people as is often done on this list, doG I may even show their new pup for them,  NOT can you put me in touch with a bitch owner so we can breed my pet dog doG help us we are talking GSD’s here, Not a safe breed but a big working dog that have health issues there are more than enough breeders she can buy a healthy pup off maybe even with her dogs lines in it.
I note there was no mension of a breeder nor a knowledge of hip scores etc I also noted she wanted the bitch on her doorstep, True breeders will travel hundreds of miles for the right dog as in GSD’s they even imported fresh blood lines into the UK

As Tjhoe has said she nearly brought a GSD off a backyard breeder with no health checks WE including myself stuck our noses in and she has now got the lovely boy she has to share her live with.

I found your mail offensive both to me and my friends that try very hard to breed sound healthy dogs and will fight to try and put an end to backyard breeding, puppy farms, pet shops that sell dogs, so if you don’t agree that in our own ways we want the same thing feel free to mail me privately but without the blaze of red and blue

    Hi
lm new to the dog board, and l must say it makes intersteing reading l agree with the person who says it is up to the lady owner herself at the end of the day, we have just bred a litter of  11 GSD puppies born 15th Nov 07 and they are all KC reg: with all the paperwork it is hard work to vet the new families but l think trusting your own justments plus listening to what the new owners are asking this gives a very good idea as to how they will cope & look after the new member to their family, we give plenty of advise in the puppy pack plus keep in touch by phone /email when we have vistors to see the puppies we ask them plenty of questions also, but very important we keep in touch and they feel better as it is a big deal taking a new baby home which doesnt stay a baby for long l admit, l have tried to attach a photo of the daddy but it is coming back as too large so l have included one of the puppies (his daughters) hope you enjoy it.
l would just like to add it is sooo very much hard work looking after the puppies plus the mum lets not forget her she needs a lot of looking after but boy is it worth it not in money terms but just looking after the puppies and seeing how they are coming on which is great.
    Regards
    Kerrygirl

    Hi and welcome  🙂

Cute pups – was going to ask the same question as Val – have the parents been health checked?

Hi thanks for the welcome but where is the intro thread!!! just to confirm (not sure if the question was to me regarding HS of both parnets) but yes they are  both health checked and very much loved family members.
