Thats great news but didn’t know they had to be tested yearly. Can you tell us more about the test and what they are looking for?

THe link to the KC/BVA/ISDS eye scheme is here.

It explains about eye testing, the different conditions that affect different breeds and the importance of removing affected dogs from breeding programmes.

Not all breeds must be tested but there are two schedules one of which is regarding breeds which have known issues and others which are breeds under investigation.

GSD are on Schedule A for HC (Heriditary Cataract).ย  This condition as well as others requires a yearly screen; others may only need one for life.

Very very few GSD breeders have their dogs eye screened.

    Thanks Sweetypye ย ;D
As you know I have a sheltie and Rough collie both of which are tested as pups and are from eye tested stock, both the sheltie’s parents were eye clear. Weren’t sure what GSD’s were tested for but now I know ๐Ÿ˜‰

I do not know of anyone personally that has their GSD eye screened, funny how in some breeds it is seen as de rigeur and in others not; even very experienced breeders……..

He has not been used yet, I have received many requests but those that have asked have not had the quality I would expect and/or have not had their bitches hip/elbow scored and eye screened themselves.

He is a quality dog, I have no intention on using him on inferior stock.
