    Hi,

kiz – not sure if you missed my point ??

i was trying to say that just because hound is used for rescue dog socialisation doesnt mean it wouldnt hunt and possibly kill  – as in its not a reliable measure of overall temprament as the poster seems to think it is (?).

yep – i have seen and experienced foxhounds … spent most of my life until age 18 living in the middle of a hunt 😀  then as an adult used to see hounds everyday on way to work in the morning as i drove right past the kennel and they were usually out on the road exercising.

i have never seen a “pet” foxhound but I am a collie person and I know that working collies and pet homes dont mix – unless those homes are prepared, bloody minded and experienced … am not slating hounds as a breed just applying same principles that average “pet” home not understand mind of working drive genetics jobs history …

i am biased – i love watching dogs work.  give me that anyday over a dog with a traditional job who is stuck indoors with you average owner .. .. ..

wouldnt give your avg owner more than a few days with a FH … no more than some stand of a BC or some other breeds …

    Claire.

Well Hovawart – hello and welcome. sad that you dont wish to post an intro – but id like to assure you that there are people on who here who know more about dogs than you can imagine.
And i do wonder if my honey would indeed left to her own devices form a pack – might make a good discussion you guys what do you think. Knowing her id say not hell she walks past bunnies half the time – maybe with a dog who was more that way inclined who knows……………..

I know for a fact that hovawarts are mean and evil.  i wouldn’t give one the time of day …besides they’re nothing more than big ugly goldens anyway   :whatever:

I’m tired of trying to placate these hit and run artists who take no time to learn about this forum, its members and what it’s all about

Here is my final post: pleased that I could stimulate some action.

Is steam coming out my ears? Not at all! Yes, the blonde Hovis do look like big goldies. No argument from me there, but I fail to understand why that should bother me?

Yes, Hovi boys in particular can be evil, and require strong leadership, but so too can any individual of any bred.

Your responses are typical of forums. One usually encounters contributors whose eloquence does not extend beyond telling someone to **** off, and a bunch of bigots (perhaps some of you also believe all black people are criminals?).  Let’s not forget there are those who immediately presume they know more than anyone else possibly could (I guess you could teach Roger Mugford, or Jan Fennel a thing or two?). But if you know so much, how comes Hovis and Foxhound are beyond your gargantuan understanding and capabilities?

Apologies to all the pleasant and intelligent people here – I’m sure there are some of you (like Foxhound, Hovi and Goldie owners).

Bye – I’ve got a life to live.

Play nice before I start deleting.

This thread was about people’s experience with foxhounds both as working dogs and as pets.

Not got much experience with Hovis I am afraid, not many in the UK, even less now than when they were originally imported if that is not tautology!

Interestingly they are on the FCI list for Schutzhund and some do take part, not in the UK however.

They never really took off in the UK primarily I think because they do not look sufficiently “different” for people to take them up, most people think they are a X breed.

It is not actually essential for anyone to LIVE with certain breeds to understand their nature provided of course there are sufficient other opportunities to learn from them eg work.

I have worked in hunt kennels so seen hundreds if not thousands of FH at very close quarters in and out of kennels, working, being exercised etc

Just as I understand the difference between Arabs, Thoroughbreds and Welsh Cobs, because I have worked with them, ridden them, competed on them and understand they have different personalities (if that is the right term).

I reveiwed this thread before I posted and I inferred from the majority of the posts of non FH owning people that they like them, admired them but would not recommend them as a pet.

The same can be applied to many breeds as a generalisation and re specific individual enquiries re environment, expectations etc.

I think Malamutes and Huskies are FABULOUS but I would never own one as for ME personally I would never want to own one that could never be let off the lead, as I think I have said once before.  I LOVE some other breeds but I could never own one as we would not be compatible and both of us would be unhappy.

    Chill :ok:

i agree sp – part of owning dogs is matching your own temprament / personality to the dogs

i just wouldnt have a weime … i just feel they would be “too large” (i dont mean just physical size) – everything about them just seems … well … large 😉

think they’re gorgeous dogs, love all the ones on here – but just not for me.

for me i couldnt have a better realisation of this than when fostering terriers and spitz breeds – oh my god too skitty too noisey (thats saying summat with wills) too much too aaaaagh manic !!

happy to stick with my collie x’s and small lurchery things 🙂  … i was lucky i have the rescue to thank for telling me which dogs would be suitable and which wouldnt first time round – some rescues either dont have the perceptual skills etc …. and kiz plus fostering experience 2nd time round …

I know this had already been done but I have only just come across this website (and wish I hadn’t), and have to comment on some of the most stupid, and as already said ‘narrow minded’ comments I have seen

For the comment saying the fox hound pup should be put down is absolulely mind-bogling. People should get educated rather than make such ridiculous statements.

I have taken on a 5 year old hound and I admit he has issues but NOT because he is a hound, but because of the abuse he has suffered as a puppy.

Our boy is excellent off the lead, and so is another foxhound who lives near to us. Yes they need plenty of exceersis, yes they love there food and yes they love penty of attention. He lives in the house, enjoys obediance and his agility classes. He does chase the odd squirel but not deers, in fact we were 10feet away from 1 and he just stood by side.

Rather than make ill-informed comments perhaps you should get to know the breed!!
