You have to laugh at the councils and govenrments. On one hand they have brough out this charter that states all dogs have to be fit and healthy, which includes exercise and then they say you are not allowed to exercise them either in the free areas in the borough.

KC Dog, the Kennel Club’s campaign group in place to help responsible dog owners protect their rights, is alerting dog owners in Brent to a dog control order consultation currently taking place in the borough.

The Kennel Club is concerned that the schedule put forward by Brent Council includes proposals that will require dogs to be kept on leads at all times within all of the borough’s smaller parks.

Commenting on the proposals, Caroline Kisko, Kennel Club Communications Director, said: “All dog owners have a legal obligation to fully exercise their dogs under the Animal Welfare Act 2006.  If the areas available for essential off-lead access are limited across the borough, the dog owners of Brent could be at risk of compromising the health and welfare of their dogs.

“The Kennel Club advocates that any proposals to exclude or make restrictions to access for dog owners should be countered by providing off-lead access elsewhere. We strongly recommend that the council considers more measured options in the first instance.”

In addition to the ‘dogs on leads’ order, the council is also intending to introduce dog exclusion zones within playgrounds, multi-use games areas, tennis courts and bowling greens, in addition to limiting the maximum number of dogs to be controlled by one person to six.

KC Dog is urging all dog owners living in the area to respond to the consultation, which closes on 28th February 2011, to ensure that their opinions are considered.

Maps of the areas to be covered can be viewed via the Parks website, or in person at Brent Parks Service from the hours of 9am – 5pm. All responses to the consultation should be sent to: Brent Parks Service, 349 – 357 High Road, Wembley, Middlesex, HA9 6BZ, or by email to parks.service@….
