Cook a lump of liver with garlic in water till cooked, then cut it up into really small pieces bake until hard in a low oven, bag up and freeze get it out as needed
I have always used this to train dogs all breeds and they all like it once had 16 dogs mixed breed following me across a field and back to their owners without one stopping for a sniff.
Another thing you should try is doing ringcraft off lead.
It makes dogs use their brain and focus the rule with this training is that other people do not touch him if he goes near another dog you just block him and use your voice to get him back.
And number one rule is do not stuff food in a dogs face it’s just a reward and should be used as such.
Dogs that can’t focus in a ring are usually caused by face feeding so the dog does not really understand what you want which is focus at all times

Thank you for the recipe and kind advice, I normaly keep the bait in a pocket so that he watches my hand as I put it there and then reward him when he is standing correctly and using his ears and reach of neck to good advantage.

I will try him offlead at ringcraft but will have to see how that goes as he can be a little bit naughty with bigger breeds of dog as he wants to warn them off like many other smaller breeds of dog. he often barks at them but never makes contact, He has to grow to trust them first.

Just a quick update, at ringcraft I dropped the lead when he was standing and he stood much better and was far more focused on me and showed like a dream.

Hope you wont mind me asking this but will I run foul of any kennel club rule re showing not holding his lead as a friend has suggested I may be breaking a rule! I have seen some exhibitors doing it in gundogs though, I would welcome your advice please.

It is a KC rule that the lead should be attached to the dog at all times and be held by the exhibitor. However I have seen this rule broken hundreds of times with no consequences!

Sp is right it’s in the red book at all times dogs must be on a lead.
If I was you at ringcraft I would not even put him on a lead, work without it, this makes you more aware of keeping good focus and makes it more enjoyment for him.
Just out of interest have you ever tried changing what you show him on ?
As I said before I think it’s down to lack of focus between you and him and working dogs off lead where the voice is all the contact you have with the dog is something I have used many times, it also works with dogs that rush round a ring as it is usually the handlers pace that is wrong not the dog.
