How to clean dog pee on your carpet and get rid of the dog urine smell

Some pets without proper urine habits find the carpets to be the best spot to relieve themselves. If your dog is one of them then speed is your best line of offence.

Urine tends to be a little harder to spot at first glance.

However, dog pee odour is quite pungent and you will inevitably find where it originates from, comments the Vale Cleaning Company. When you find the carpet area where your beloved dog decided to relieve itself it’s time to get some paper towels or rags to soak up the pee. The longer you let the dog urine sit on the carpet the worse it gets.

To manage the situation follow these steps:

  1. Soak up as much of the dog pee from your carpeting with paper towels.
  2. Make a solution of equal parts white vinegar and water.
  3. Work the mix into the carpet using a scrubbing brush.
  4. Blot the area again with paper towels/rags.
  5. Sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda on the affected area.
  6. Mix half a cup of hydrogen peroxide with a teaspoon of washing up liquid and apply it to the stain.
  7. Work the solution with a scrubbing brush into the carpet.
  8. Let the carpet dry completely and vacuum it thoroughly.

How to clean old dog pee stains from your carpet

Luckily, old urine stains aren’t impossible to clean. There is a good chance that you will be able to restore the look of your carpet by following this advice.

The lightest treatment consists of mixing dishwashing soap and hot water.

  1. Dampen the area with the solution using a cloth or sponge.
  2. Dab as much moisture off as possible with paper towels.
  3. Do this a few times and leave the carpet to dry completely.
  4. If the stain persists try something with a bigger punch – mix vinegar and water in equal parts and soak the area, but try to be reasonable and not overdo it. Vinegar is great at breaking down the urine even further.
  5. After soaking the place where your dog peed blot it with paper towels, without rubbing it further in.
  6. Lightly brush the area, this will help the solution to penetrate deeper into the carpet fibres.
  7. Don’t scrub too intensely or you will do more harm than good. Just like the other method, use paper towels to soak up the moisture then sprinkle with baking soda and vacuum it off after an hour.
